Two airlines cancelling thousands of flights, Hungary also affected!

British Airways and Lufthansa have to cancel thousands of flights due to labour shortages in the autumn and winter periods. The changes also affect Hungary, as flights to Budapest will be cancelled, too.

British Airways

According to airportal.hu, British Airways has to cancel about 8 percent of the originally planned number of flights – ten thousand. Due to the extension of the daily limit of 100,000 passengers until 2 October, British Airways is forced to cancel more than 1,200 more flights in addition to the previous cuts for the rest of the summer schedule. The airline tried to reduce capacity on short-haul routes where there are several flights a day. Therefore, the affected passengers can easily rebook their flight tickets.

Lufthansa

Moreover, Lufthansa is also about to cancel flights. Although it has previously said that it is overcoming the summer chaos, the airline needs to stabilise the schedule. Lufthansa will reduce the number of flights and distribution centres in Frankfurt and Munich in the winter period. Exact numbers have not yet been announced, but some long-distance routes may also be affected by the capacity reduction. However, Lufthansa is also mainly trying to cut on its domestic and European routes, where it can offer more rebooking alternatives to the affected passengers.

Budapest is also affected

Lufthansa has already updated its flights in the reservation systems for September, reports roadster.hu. It will launch 22 percent less European flights from Frankfurt and 8 percent less from Munich compared to the schedule at the end of June and mid-August. These also affect Budapest. Instead of the originally planned 150 flights, Lufthansa is planning 107 flights between Frankfurt and Budapest. In addition, the airline plans 103 flights between Munich and the Hungarian capital instead of 116 in the first month of autumn. According to British Airways and Lufthansa, the pre-announced reductions serve to minimise delays and last-minute flight cancellations.
